Experimental type foundry practice | 2026

 Objective

Develop a functioning typeface by experimenting with non-digital components to build a typeset.

 Challenge

Create a typeface that show dimension and visual texture that results in a usable monoline sans serif all-uppercase font with sauce as the medium.

 Concept overview

By writing each letterform out freehand in mustard, I was able to scan the letterforms and adjust the threshold to capture the perfect amount of highlight on each letter.

 Rationale

This project explores the process of experimenting with typography through non-digital mediums. Aioli Sans is a functional typeface containing capitalized sans-serif monoline letterforms written in mustard and digitally altered after scanning. Writing each letter without a stencil meant that each letter would have unique characteristics while still maintaining uniformity in x-height and width, for the most part. The resulting typeface is dimensional and offers a hint of texture without taking away from the structure of each letterform. While the execution is not intended for professional use, this typeface would be best used as a display or heading font.
